« Remember that you shall die. »
These pictures present the Morne-à-l’eau cemetery on the island of Guadeloupe. The black and white checked patterns which decorate most of the tombs, and which have made it internationally renowned, give this space the appearance of an immense checkboard. I discover here the allegory of a vast game between life and death.
I wander in the alleys of this cemetery while imagining the stories of these lamented, their life(lives), their end(s). And, where we only see sadness, pain and suffering, I try to see dignity and beauty. Then, since we shall die, let us hasten to live, and, above all, to live well.
What about you,
Are you sure to be on the right side?
